A backflow incense burner creates a waterfall-like smoke display using special cones and a shaped smoke channel. If you are choosing your first burner or refilling an existing one, here is how to get the best result.
How do backflow incense burners work?
Unlike ordinary incense cones, a backflow cone has an opening that channels smoke down into a compatible holder. The burner directs that smoke through steps or decorative shapes. Regular incense cones can burn without creating the cascading effect.
How to use a backflow incense burner
- Choose a safe place: Put the burner on a stable, non-flammable, heat-resistant surface in a well-ventilated room, away from children, pets, loose fabric and draughts.
- Choose the right cone: Use a compatible backflow cone. Align its bottom opening with the burner channel.
- Light it: Follow the cone maker's directions, extinguish the flame so the tip smoulders, and place it carefully without touching the hot end.
- Watch the effect: After the cone warms, smoke should begin moving down the burner. Airflow and cone design can change the appearance.
- Clean after cooling: Wait until the incense is extinguished and the burner is completely cool, then remove ash and wipe away residue according to the manufacturer's care instructions.
Why does the smoke rise rather than fall?
Check that you are using a true backflow cone and that its opening lines up with the burner's smoke path. A fan, open window or strong draught can disrupt the cascade. Give the cone enough time to warm up. Results vary depending on the burner and cone design.
Which incense cones should I buy?
For a refill, look for cones specifically marked as compatible with standard backflow burners. If you want to explore several aromas, our six-scent refill pack contains 72 backflow cones across six varieties. The set is intended for standard backflow burners, including the dragon burners sold in our shop.
Choosing a burner or gift set
Choose a shape that suits your space and check the material, size and cleaning instructions. Our dragon waterfall burner is a decorative option. For a ready-to-gift arrangement with matching cones, see the dragon waterfall incense gift set.
Safety and ventilation
Burning incense releases smoke. Use adequate ventilation and limit exposure, particularly if smoke causes respiratory irritation. Never leave burning incense unattended. Keep it away from children, pets and flammable materials. Follow the supplied instructions, use heat-resistant surfaces and allow the burner to cool completely before handling or cleaning.
Frequently asked questions
Do ordinary incense cones work in a backflow burner?
They may burn, but they will not reliably create the downward smoke effect. Use dedicated backflow cones instead.
Does the waterfall work in every room?
Room airflow, cone alignment and burner shape affect the result. A strong draught can carry smoke sideways.
Do backflow burners require cleaning?
Yes. Ash and smoke residue can collect in the channels. Clean only when fully cool, following the material-specific care instructions.
